Situated in the Central Valley of California, Stanislaus County was formed in 1854 and named for the Stanislaus River. Its population is over half a million, mostly urban. Winery and agriculture are its two primary industries. Stanislaus County offers a wide variety of cultural and sporting events as well as music, art, festivals, golf, river rafting and boating among many others. Tourist attractions and places of interest include Adamsville State Historic Landmark, Big Bear Park, Knights Ferry Recreation Area and Turlock Lake State Park. Part of San Joaquin River National Wildlife Refuge, a national protected are, is within the county’s boundaries. Stanislaus County is also home to California State University Stanislaus and Modesto Junior College.
