Halfway between San Francisco and Sacramento lays Solano County, one of the nine San Francisco Bay Area counties. Its population is a little over 400,000, with county seat Fairfield. The county was formed in 1850; it derives its name from an Indian Chief – Chief Solano of the Suisunes, a Native American tribe which inhabited the region. Solano County boasts numerous parks with a variety of outdoor amenities and activities. Popular attractions include the 177 acres of Lake Solano Park in northern Solano County, Sandy Beach Park in Rio Vista, and Glen Cove Waterfront Park. The county also operates the 1,039 acres of agricultural land at Lynch Canyon Open Space. Colleges in Solano County include California Maritime Academy and Solano Community College.
