Shasta County is situated at the northern part of California's Sacramento Valley. The county seat is Redding. The county’s name is derived from the English equivalent for the name of an Indian tribe that once inhabited the area. Mountains, lakes and rivers surround the region, offering a wide variety of recreational activities – from fishing, boating, hiking and skiing to biking, camping and kayaking. Popular attractions include Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park, Cinder Flats State Wildlife Area, Shasta Lake and a few old gold mining towns. Four national protected areas are within the boundaries of the county including parts of Lassen National Forest and Lassen Volcanic National Park. Shasta County has four colleges and universities, and 27 school districts, with an emphasis on quality education and diverse programs.
