The county is named after Mission Santa Clara, founded in 1777. Its original inhabitants were the Ohlone - the indigenous people of Northern California, residing on Coyote Creek and Calaveras Creek. There are hundreds of places to visit, including Almaden Quicksivler County Park, Emilio Guglielmo Winery, Mississippi Creek and Saratoga Gap Open Space Preserve among many others.
