Known for its famous wineries, Santa Barbara County is a diverse region that offers something for everyone - from its rich culture, architecture and sights of the “American Riviera” to the relaxed, down-home feeling of the Valley. Its seat is Santa Barbara and its population is a little over 400,000, mostly urban. The county was first settled by Native Americans at least 13,000 years ago. Places of interest include Santa Rosa Park, Chumash Painted Cave State Historical Park, Abel Canyon Campground and Christi Beach among many others. There are 23 independent school districts in Santa Barbara County, and the Santa Barbara County Education Office serves as an intermediate agency between those districts and the California Department of Education. With its numerous educational opportunities, Santa Barbara County proves that education is a main focus of its residents and visitors.
