Created in 1850, Monterey County is situated on the Pacific coast of California, with its northwestern section forming the southern half of Monterey Bay, where its name comes from. Its population is a little above 400,000, mostly urban. The county seat is Salinas. The county’s famous coastline, including Big Sur, State Route 1 and the 17 Mile Drive on the Monterey Peninsula, attracts visitors from all over the world. The economy is based mainly on tourism in the coastal regions and agriculture in the Salinas River valley. Some places of interest are John Little State Park, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Battle of Natividad State Historic Landmark, Sandy Beach and Elk Campground. With its excellent schools, exciting lifestyle and a wide variety of activities, Monterey County is a great place to study in and raise a family.
