Situated in California's Eastern Sierra, between Yosemite National Park and Nevada, Mono County is a land of high plains, dramatic alpine backdrops, and clear lakes and streams. Its county seat is Bridgeport. Mono County was formed in 1861 and named after Mono Lake which, in 1852, was named after a Native American Paiute tribe that inhabited the Sierra Nevada from north of Mono Lake to Owens Lake. The county offers a wide variety of activities – hiking, boating, biking, horseback riding, camping, fishing, skiing and bird-watching to name just a few. Mono Lake, located in the middle of the county, is a vital habitat for millions of migratory and nesting birds. Also located in Mono County is Bodie - the official state gold rush ghost town, which is a California State Historic Park today. With its breathtaking beauty and abundance of outdoor and indoor activities, Mono County is a great place to live in and study.
