Kern County is the third largest county in California, and it’s located in the southern Central Valley. The county seat is Bakersfield. One of the county’s main sources of economy is agriculture; it’s also a significant producer of oil, natural gas, hydro-electric power, wind-turbine power, and geothermal power. This historic area, where settlers were once attracted by gold and the "black gold" of oil, is nowadays called California's Golden Empire. Kern's desert is home to the magnificent Red Rock Canyon State Park and the living ghost town of Randsburg. Other notable locations include Vernon P. Saxon Flight Museum, Buck Owens' Crystal Palace in San Joaquin Valley, California Living Museum and Tule Elk State Reserve. A wide variety of activities is available - from golfing, hunting and fishing to auto racing, sky diving and rock climbing. With its great natural diversity, created by mountains, valley and desert areas, Kern County has something to offer to everyone.
