Established in 1866, Inyo County is located in east-central California, on the east side of the Sierra Nevada and south of Yosemite National Park. The county’s name comes from the Native American name for the mountains in the area, meaning "dwelling place of the great spirit." The county seat is Independence. Inyo County is a host to a number of natural superlatives, such as Mount Whitney, the highest point in the United States outside of Alaska, Badwater in Death Valley, the lowest point in North America, and the Great Basin bristlecone pines – some of the oldest life forms in the world. In addition, the county offers a wide variety of activities like alpine climbing, skiing, hang gliding, horsepacking, fishing and mountain biking. The John Muir Wilderness has remained practically the same for thousands of years. Some other attractions are Sage Flat Campground, Alabama Hills Recreation Area, Manzanar National Historic Site and Death Valley National Park. With its magnificent natural diversity, rich culture and heritage, Inyo County is a great place to live in and raise a family.
