Contra Costa County was incorporated in 1850 as one of the original 27 counties of the State of California, with the City of Martinez as the county seat. The most notable natural landmark in the county is Mount Diablo, which together with its neighboring North Peak are the centerpiece of Mt. Diablo State Park. The county’s name comes from Spanish, meaning “opposite coast.” It’s one of the nine counties in the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Area; it’s also the ninth most populous county in California, with over 1 million population. There are many attractions and places to visit, some of which are Briones Regional Park, John Muir National Historic Site, Prewett Family Water Park and Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park. In addition, the county is home to numerous museums and historic sites. With its rich culture and heritage, Contra Costa County is a great place to live in and study.
